In 2018, 11 killer whales (all of them turned out to be cubs) and 90 beluga whales, later three beluga whales and one killer whale disappeared from their enclosures, were found in the "whale prison" - in the Srednyaya Bay in Primorye.
The animals were caught illegally and planned to be sold in China. Investigators opened a case of illegal fishing of aquatic biological resources and animal cruelty. President Vladimir Putin joined in the solution of the problem - he instructed the relevant ministries together with scientists to decide the fate of animals.
The operation to return the animals to their natural habitat began in June 2019. The first batch of two killer whales and six beluga whales was released into the Sea of Okhotsk on June 27.
In October, it was decided to release the last 50 belugas before November 1, 2019 and do this not in the Sea of Okhotsk, as before, but in the Assumption Bay not far from the Lazovsky Reserve in Primorye. This decision was made due to autumn storms, lack of funding and the need to ensure the safety of people and animals in the stormy sea. Later, the date of the last release action was moved to November 10.
According to scientists, this area of the Sea of Japan is now a good food supply.
