The Ruble of Prince Menshikov (1859). An antique note.

The Ruble of Prince Menshikov (1859). An antique note.

Starting to write the miniature "The Ruble of Peter the Great", I - at first, initially - thought about Alexander Menshikov.

Hero of the Battle of Poltava... He is known to everybody, to all...

However, somehow the thought did not go in this direction.

I wrote about the Alexander Suvorov's ruble (1742), about the Alexander Pushkin's coin (1836)...

If Heinrich Schliemann imagined in Greece that the heroes of Homer touched the rare objects found by Schliemann, then why couldn't Suvorov and Pushkin touch the coins that I once accidentally acquired?

Who could touch the ruble of 1859?

Again the surname "Menshikov". Prince Alexander Menshikov (1787 - 1869).

I wrote about him: '[MMСXCIX.] Prince Alexander Sergeyevich Menshikov, great-grandson of an associate of Peter the Great. The ironic patriotism of the intelligentsia of the Petrine epoch origin. A historical and biographical essay. - June 5, 2021".

Most likely, Prince Menshikov received payments from the state treasury in gold coins, but a silver ruble could also fall into his hands.

So I am putting up for sale the Ruble of Prince Menshikov.

When preparing the text of the announcement of the sale, I found the following information:

  "The Coin Description

On the obverse and reverse sides of the coin there is a edging protruding along the circumference.

The obverse of the coin depicts a portrait of Emperor Nicholas I in profile, facing left... Along the circumference there is an inscription: "NICHOLAS I, EMPEROR AND AUTOCRAT OF ALL RUSSIA."

On the reverse of the coin there is an image of the monument to Nicholas I on St. Isaac's Square in St. Petersburg, under it the inscription "RUBLE" between two points. To the left of the monument in a semicircle from bottom to top is the inscription - "JUNE 25 DAY", to the right from top to bottom also in a semicircle - "1859"... "

The monument to Nicholas I was created from 1856 to 1859 .... A massive equestrian statue weighing 21 tons ... is installed on a high stone pedestal ... This is the first monument in Europe in which the sculpture of a horse rests only on its hind legs, which gives it a special lightness and swiftness. ' [unofficial translation]

'The price among collectors [for coins with a denomination of the ruble of 1859] differs depending on the state of preservation, the average cost is about 110,000 [modern Russian] rubles.' [unofficial translation]
