It's better to be wrong with everyone, than to be right alone. About the book by Giovanni Della Casa "Galateo or, The Rules of Polite Behavior" (1551-1554). The note.

While continuing to look through the book "Works of the great Italians of the 16th century. Series" Library of Renaissance culture "" ["Сочинения великих итальянцев XVI в. Серия "Библиотека ренессансной культуры" // Составление, комментарии Л.М. Брагиной; перевод с итальянского. - Спб. 2002. - 377 с.], I found the work by Giovanni Della Casa.

An interesting work, acquaintance with which any person will be useful - regardless of whether a reader agrees with all the recommendations and thoughts of Giovanni Della Casa.

This work is a kind of textbook on good manners, on good morals.

For example, I liked such recommendations.

Don't make other people smell the smelly (what stinks).

Do not treat your neighbor with a pear or any fruit after you have bitten it yourself. ". [here and further - translation from the Russian-language text]

Do not try to offer your handkerchief to anyone, even if it is the freshest. For the one to whom you offer, he does not know what it is, and may disdain it.

In mutual communication, people need only what it can give them, namely, location, signs of respect, fun, and so on, in the same way.

Using "you" ("voi" - more respectful form) while contacting a person , if he is not of the lowest sort, we do not infringe on ourselves, but using "you" ("tu" - less respectful form), we deprive him of what is due to him, besides, we inflict insult, equating him to a commoner and a peasant.

... it is most reasonable to accept people as a coin: not at true value, but at the rate ...

... expressing oneself as a petty tyrant, declaring his power and right, ... it is not customary to do in front of people who are revered ...

... our ancestors called this sin "subservience", and it could not be more shameful...

... if someone invites you [to drink wine], then you can boldly refuse, saying that you are giving in and you are thanking, but out of politeness you can also drink without finishing.

And what about those who leave the office-room with a pen behind their ear? ... and about those who do a lot of other stupid things?

With pleasure and with benefits I have read the work of Giovanni Della Casa.

After Della Casa's work, his brief biography is given. Cultural, educated, efficient, creative person! This brief biography contains the following words: "the pope did not want to raise Della Casa to the rank of cardinal, which was a heavy blow for him. He soon died in Rome."

Indeed, Della Casa (1503 - 1556) died quite early: he was only 53 years old.

If one takes the point of view that Della Casa's death was caused by grief due to the Pope's unwillingness to raise Della Casa to the rank of cardinal, then with this line of thought one can assume that if Della Casa had had a little more contempt, skepticism, irony and self-irony , - in addition to good manners, to the desire to achieve "approval", - then perhaps he would have lived another twenty or thirty years, and would have written many more excellent works.
