Heinrich Stoll and his books. The note.

If the reader is interested in the personality of Heinrich Schliemann and books about Schliemann, then this reader will naturally receive a certain amount of information about Troy.

This happened to me as well.

Once upon a time I had found references that linked the semi-mythical history of Troy and the semi-mythical history of Ancient Rome.

Quite a lot of various publications are devoted to ancient Greek and ancient Roman mythology.

Using the books available to me, I tried to clarify the issue of the relationship between ancient Troy and Ancient Rome (in the mythological sense).

Some useful texts came across to me, but, in general, the question remained not entirely clear to me.

Recently, by coincidence, I turned to the books by Heinrich Alexander Stoll (1910 - 1977) - those that are available in Russian.

Naturally, if the reader turns to the biography of Heinrich Alexander Stoll, he will find a lot of interesting things there, but in addition to interesting biographical details, the reader will also find that Heinrich Alexander Stoll was a prolific writer. One of the main topics for him was an Archeology.

As a person interested in archeology and a native of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Stoll wrote a book about Heinrich Schliemann, which has been translated into Russian and is now available in electronic libraries. (Judging by the list of references in German, Stoll dedicated several works to Schliemann).

So, the total list of books written by Stoll (mainly in German) significantly exceeds the number of his books that are currently translated into Russian.

I recently got acquainted with the book "Myths of Classical Antiquity" ["Die Sagen des classischen Alterthums"].

I did not find this book in the list of the Heinrich Alexander Stoll's publications (given in the German-language Wikipedia). In addition, the author of "H.W. Stoll" is indicated on the cover. In German, Stoll's name is written: "Heinrich Joachim Friedrich Karl Hans Stoll ". Where does the "W." in the initials come from? (Where "Alexander" is?)

(Heinrich Wilhelm Stoll (1819-1890) - German philologist and historian, scholar of antiquity, the author of books on mythology.)

Anyway, I read with interest the material ("The Migration of Aeneas" [after the Flight of Aeneas from Troy]), which links the semi-mythical history of Troy and the semi-mythical history of Ancient Rome. A gap in my knowledge on this topic has been filled.

In another book, "The History of Ancient Rome in Biographies" ["Geschichte der Römer in Biographien"] (I didn"t see the author"s name on the cover at all, but there is "H.W. Stoll" in the text) I read with interest the biography of Lucullus.

In Russian there is a stable phrase "Lucullus' Feast" ["Lucullus' banqueting"]. The very name "Lucullus" is associated in the "Russian context" with extraordinary abundance and luxury.

An interesting biography. Lucius Licinius Lucullus was a successful general with somewhat ambiguous successes. After completing his military career, he lived in the style of one of the richest citizens of Rome - a man with a not very happy personal life. He lived for about 60 years. Before his death, he fell into a mental illness. From the depth of History, authors has conveyed to the public not stories about his military glory, but the phrase "today Lucullus is visiting Lucullus" ["today Lucullus dines with Lucullus"]. The meaning of this statement was that a dinner without guests should be as luxurious and expensive as it was if guests were invited. "Lucullus' Feast" was supplemented - in my vision - with new details ...

So, the prolific writer Heinrich Alexander Stoll lived and worked in the 20th century - a man with an interesting biography - some of whose books have been translated from German into Russian and are available to Russian-speaking readers ...

A history also remembered Heinrich Wilhelm Stoll (1819-1890), the author of books on mythology...
