Hajdukov, Korolev, Chelomey. A biographical note.

Hajdukov, Korolev, Chelomey. A biographical note.

Sergei Korolev was arrested on June 27, 1938.

Around the same time (in 1936), a student of the Kiev Aviation Institute, Vladimir Chelomey, disappeared for several days.

  What happened to Vladimir Chelomey?

He allegedly bought a book in a store, read it. He found in the bookt dubious, or even erroneous, provisions, and he decided to express his opinion to the author.

The author was an academician who lived in Leningrad.

The student Vladimir Chelomey had to trip from Kiev to Leningrad. He come to the academician's apartment and start a conversation in the hallway.

At first, the academician suggested that the uninvited guest write a letter with comments. But the vigorous student managed to declare himself. He spent the night in the academician's apartment. After a detailed discussion of the book, the academician was forced to agree with many of the remarks of a persistent and competent student who clearly possesses diplomatic abilities. (From the biographies of Vladimir Chelomey it follows that fate will bring him together with people with the surnames Beria, Mikoyan, Khrushchev ... In some cases, he will be able to effectively use these contacts ...).

While Vladimir Chelomey was receiving a Stalinist scholarship [stalin 'grant' for doctoral students] and was writing his doctoral dissertation, Sergei Korolev pondered the principles of the application of criminal law in the context of the exacerbation of the class struggle under socialism.

Sergei Korolev and Vladimir Chelomey have something in common. For example, both of them were born in the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Both of them studied in Kiev, almost at the same institute.

But much, very much, distinguished them from each other.

  What could unite them?

After the end of the Second World War, the enormous scientific potential, accumulated by Germany, ended up on the territory of the Soviet zone of occupation.

Lev Mikhailovich Hajdukov, who was making a career in the fields of Soviet artillery and of the apparatus of the CPSU, was appointed the head of the commission for the study of captured German rocket weapons.

Conditions of activity in Germany were significantly different from those in the USSR. In the zone of occupation, almost all power belonged to the military.

Hajdukov decides not to export specialists and equipment from Germany to the USSR, but, on the contrary, to collect the entire rocket scientific potential under the control of one organization, to move specialists from the USSR to Germany.

Thus, on the initiative of Lev Mikhailovich Hajdukov, the multidisciplinary rocket institute "Nordhausen" was organized. In Germany, all those who later brought the Soviet space industry to first place in the world had a chance to meet.

Korolev, Chelomey, and many, many others have visited Germany ...

It was somehow calmer here, under the wing of the military. Alexander Vasilevsky was gaining an influence.

Conditions gradually matured for the creation of the Council of Chief Designers (1946 - 1966) - under the general leadership of Sergei Pavlovich Korolev.

As for Lev Mikhailovich Hajdukov, he was born at the Plekhanovo station of the Tula province.

Some hint is contained in his surname - originally free peasants fighting against the Ottoman Empire were called hajduks.

Hajduks, as a kind of infantry, presumably appeared in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under Stefan Batory, who started to rule the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1575.

With all the differences - in the biographies of Hajdukov, Korolev, Chelomey, - perhaps, there is something in common in them ...
