The MIR orbital station was sunk in the Pacific Ocean on March 23, 2001.
At the time when the MIR space station was deorbited, then all the consequences of this action were not yet clear.
But, in any case, it was clear that Russia - after the loss of the MIR station - remains with a large space potential and promising effective actions within the framework of the ISS program (project).
China's space potential was relatively small at the time.
The US space sector was influenced by the facts related to the launch of shuttles.
It seemed that the loss of the MIR station was a matter of speculative discussions, not real interests. The first place of Russia among the great space powers was beyond doubt.
However, from today, when three Chinese taikonauts arrived at the Chinese space station on a Chinese spacecraft, it becomes clear that the deorbit of the MIR station opened an important historical period - the period during which Russia lost its first place in the list of great space powers. (At the moment, the Chinese station consists of three elements - the the Tianhe core module, the Tianzhou-class unmanned cargo spacecraft and the Shenzhou 12 manned spacecraft).
During this time, the United States has carried out a number of successful works on the creation of spacecraft for deep and near space.
As of today, China (1) has confidently fixed itself on the list of great space powers, (2) undeniably pushed Russia from the first place in the list of great space powers to the third. Russia failed to gain a foothold in second place.
It is possible to discuss how the first and second places are distributed between the United States and China, but the fact that Russia has moved to third place - it is indisputable.
The existing space technology in Russia for manned flights to "near" space, was mainly developed during the Soviet era.
Russia has effective developments for the manned flights into "deep" space only as elements of plans (and a quite distant plans).
In addition, Russia has (a) participation in the ISS program (project), (b) an expressed intention to withdraw from this project, and there is (c) recognition that the main elements of the ISS Russial segment have exhausted their service life.
As for the Nauka module, which is supposed to be launched and docked to the ISS (as an element of the Russial segment) in 2021, a separate issue, for example, is the expiration or non-expiration of the warranty periods of components from which the Nauka module is made.
So, today, June 17, 2021, an important historical stage has been completed, which began from the moment the MIR station was deorbited (March 23, 2001). Russia has finally moved from first to third place in the list of great space powers (without stopping in second place).
Will she stay on this list? Will Russia leave the list of great space powers? Will not she become a country without independent manned cosmonautics? This will be shown in the coming years.
So from June 17, 2021, perhaps, a new stage in the history of Russial cosmos begins.
