Chervona Glinska. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

The name of the settlement sounded on the radio: "Chervona Glinska".

  Chervona - it's a "golden" or a "beautiful"?

Settlements with the adjective "Chervona" or "Chervonaya" are located mainly on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. There are enough much of them. On the territory of Russia, geographical names with the adjective "Chervony" are almost never found.

I did not find a settlement with the name "Chervona Glinska" either on the map or on the Internet. The Internet offers to get acquainted with the route from Glinsk to Chervonoy on the map.

However, I consider it highly probable that the settlement "Chervona Glinska" - or with a similar name - exists.

How to decipher such a name?

It is unlikely that "clay" [глина - glina] was admired and called "beautiful clay" or called "golden clay". The glory of "Chinese porcelain" remained with China.

Most likely, we are talking about the Glinsky [Glinski] family.

Glinsky [Glinski], princely family in 15-18 centuries. The legendary news of the genealogies lead the origin of Glinsky [Glinski] family from one of the sons of Mamai, who owned the city of Glinsky [Глинск] in the Dnieper region (hence the name of the family) and neighboring Poltava and Glinnitsa.

Mikhail Lvovich Glinsky, brought up at the court of the German emperor Maximilian, then served Albrecht of Saxony; while in Italy, he converted to Catholicism. After returning to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by the 90s of 15th century, Mikhail Lvovich Glinsky had a great influence on Grand Duke Alexander Kazimirovich.

The Glinskys parted ways with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and moved to Moscow.

Elena Vasilievna Glinskaya, the 2nd wife of Grand Duke [of Moscow State] Vasily III Ivanovich, was in 1533-38 the regent of the Russian state with (nearby) her young son, Grand Duke Ivan IV.

In 1535, a monetary reform was carried out, as a result of which a unified monetary system was introduced in the Russian state.

For a long time in the Moscow state there was a shortage of gold coins. The calculations and transactions with a gold coin in relation of the "common people" were an unusual thing and were perceived as an unusual situation.

On the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, many Western European rules were in force that regulated economic turnover. There was a gold coin: "chervonets" (sequins [zecchini] [a gold coin weighing 3.5 grams (0.12 oz) of .986 gold, minted by the Republic of Venice from the 13th century onwards] and ducats).

The physical presence of chervonets and a certain generosity (honesty, responsibility, financial discipline), characteristic of Western European culture, were comparing with the shortage of gold coins and the economic lack of rights of the general population.

It is possible that the calculations and transactions in chervonets - with a manifestation of generosity, or, in any case, honesty, responsibility - were reflected in the names of settlements.

The gold coin, widely put into circulation during the reign of the emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II, caused internal surprise, and even admiration, among the inhabitants of the Russian Empire. However, with huge cultural, social and economic distances between different groups of the population - in the absence of sufficient mutual respect and solidarity, honesty, responsibility - the relatively widespread use of the gold coin in circulation did not have a significant impact on real political processes.

Chervonets (coins made of "chervonoe" - that is, a pure - gold) lived in the memory of the Soviet people for a long time. Even at the end of the Soviet era, sometimes banknotes (especially red ones) citizens could colloquially call "chervonets".

Generosity (honesty, responsibility) plus Chervonets, a gold coins (welfare) - these qualities were deposited in the memory of the people and were recorded in the names of settlements.
